Swiss startup LocalStack has raised $25 million in Series A funding to help developers simulate and test cloud applications locally, reducing costs and latency associated with cloud-based testing. Traditionally, cloud testing requires developers to work directly within environments like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, which can be resource-intensive and costly. LocalStack’s tool, however, brings the cloud testing process to the developer’s laptop, starting with AWS emulation and expanding toward multi-cloud support.
Founded by Waldemar Hummer and Gerta Sheganaku, LocalStack began as an open-source project to help developers work more effectively offline. The platform emulates over 100 AWS services, including IAM and Kinesis, which developers can access through a Docker-based setup on their local machines. This setup not only cuts down on cloud expenses but also provides an accurate environment for testing applications.
Currently, LocalStack has more than 900 paying customers, including notable names like Apple, Comcast, IBM, and Workday. The company also retains an open-source version of the tool, with limited AWS service support available on GitHub, fostering community involvement and serving as an entry point for future paying clients.
The Series A funding round was led by Notable Capital, with participation from CRV and Heavybit. The new capital will support LocalStack’s expansion into the U.S. market and its development of multi-cloud compatibility, including upcoming support for Microsoft Azure and Snowflake.
LocalStack’s commitment to local emulation solutions is reshaping how developers approach cloud application testing.
